Vintage Hate Hoax: Kelly Marie Tran

Vietnamese-American Kelly Marie Tran, who was among those featured in the reportedly godawful Star Wars: The Last Jedi for the sake of upping the diversity factor, wrote a heart-wrenching editorial in the New York Times in which she pules piteously that she is oppressed because America has a culture that some with foreign backgrounds still attempt to assimilate into, and defiantly proclaims her intention to challenge white male American hegemony.
The piece is prefaced with this:

A few lowlights from her attempt to present herself as oppressed but defiant:
[A]t 9, I stopped speaking Vietnamese altogether because I was tired of hearing other kids mock me. Or at 17, when at dinner with my white boyfriend and his family, I ordered a meal in perfect English, to the surprise of the waitress, who exclaimed, “Wow, it’s so cute that you have an exchange student!”
The horror.
Their words reinforced a narrative I had heard my whole life: that I was “other,” that I didn’t belong, that I wasn’t good enough, simply because I wasn’t like them.
To prove that it is oppressive to treat her as “other,” she goes out of the way to belligerently emphasize her otherness. She proclaims that she feels “shame” for growing up in America’s awful culture and defiantly barks:
I am the first woman of color to have a leading role in a “Star Wars” movie.
I am the first Asian woman to appear on the cover of Vanity Fair.
My real name is Loan. And I am just getting started.
Yahoo Entertainment frames the irritating Times piece as a response to people who reacted negatively to her appearance in The Last Jedi:
Tran was open about the negative reactions she experienced after Star Wars in a candid August 2018 op-ed she wrote for the New York Times, titled, “I Won’t Be Marginalized by Online Bullying.”
But as pointed out at Disney Star Wars Is Dumb, the Times piece is a rehash of crap she had already spewed on Instagram in November 2017, a month before the lousy movie she was supposedly getting harassed over came out.
Pounding on her chest and proclaiming herself to be a victim seems to be working well for Loan, as it has for others. This is why we see so many Hate Hoaxes.
