Human Rights Establishment Opposes Free Speech
Elon Musk’s promise to allow free speech on Twitter has exposed where leftists stand on the issue. The liberal media went into meltdown. The Biden Regime reacted by creating a censorship bureau. As for the sanctimonious “human rights” establishment, Robert Spencer observes that Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and the American Civil Liberties Union all oppose this fundamental human right.
Barks Deborah Brown at Human Rights Watch:
“Freedom of expression is not an absolute right, which is why Twitter needs to invest in efforts to keep its most vulnerable users safe on the platform.”
According to their doctrine, speech progressives don’t like is violence, and violence they do like is speech. That’s why you won’t hear HRC complaining about Black Lives Matter or Antifa burning down a neighborhood; that is speech, not violence. Conversely, facts and opinions that undermine the liberal narrative are violence, not speech. The “vulnerable users” leftists piously pretend to champion must be made safe from it.
Michael Kleinman of Amnesty International USA is more specific about the allegedly vulnerable users:
“The last thing we need is a Twitter that willfully turns a blind eye to violent and abusive speech against users, particularly those most disproportionately impacted, including women, non-binary persons, and others.”
The word “others” no doubt refers to favored racial groups. If you believe in free speech, you must be a misogynous racist who is insensitive to “non-binary persons.”
Meanwhile, Anthony Romero, executive director of the ACLU, declared that the real problem was Musk himself: “While Elon Musk is an ACLU card-carrying member and one of our most significant supporters, there’s a lot of danger having so much power in the hands of any one individual.” Yet that individual has declared his determination to let people speak whose opinions are marginalized and demonized by the political and media elites. The ACLU’s real concern seems to be that the cultural power that has been almost solely in the hands of the Left for so long may not be its exclusive property for much longer.
If leftists can’t shut down the opposition’s speech, they will lose in the marketplace of ideas. They effectively acknowledge this, yet cling ever tighter to their faulty ideology, instead of rejecting it in favor of a belief system that can withstand counterarguments. Only the most gullible of them actually believe in their own dogma. For the rest, it is only a means to an end. That end is power.
Hostility to the fundamental rights enshrined in the First and Second Amendments lets you know who your enemies are. Just as no one who wants to disarm you means you well, neither does anyone who wants to shut you up.
