A victim has caught the attention of the woke lynch mob: Ilya Shapiro, Executive Director of the Center for the Constitution at Georgetown University Law Center.

Shapiro tweeted that Sri Srinivasan would be an ideal candidate for the Supreme Court, but isn’t qualified according to Joe Biden on grounds of race and gender, so we will get a “lesser black woman.” This was deliberately misinterpreted as meaning that the Biden candidate will be lesser because she will be black, although it is obvious that Shapiro meant that she will be lesser because there do not happen to be any black female candidates in Srinivasan’s league. Nonetheless, he deleted his tweet and foolishly apologized, setting himself up for immolation.

Georgetown educrats placed him on administrative leave pending an investigation into his thought crime. Georgetown Law Dean William Treanor barked that Shapiro’s remark was “appalling.” Other professors piled on, inflaming woke students.

Actual racists were quick to capitalize. Nate Hochman reports:

The Georgetown Black Law Students Association (BLSA) released a statement calling for Shapiro’s termination on top of demands such as “requiring inclusion of Black students in the hiring for all faculty and staff,” which was subsequently boosted on social media by multiple Georgetown Law professors. The BLSA statement has since been signed by 951 individuals and 39 additional student organizations, including the Georgetown Law chapter of the ACLU, the Georgetown Law Journal, and numerous other racial-affinity groups.

Students held a sit-in on Tuesday, demanding Shapiro be fired. Treanor attended. As we have come to expect of educrats, he was obsequiously sympathetic to the lynch mob he helped create.

Student activists floated the idea of defunding the Center for the Constitution if Shapiro was allowed to stay and demanded everything from reparations to free food to a place for students to cry. (“Is there an office they can go to?” one student asked. “I don’t know what it would look like, but if they want to cry, if they need to break down, where can they go?”)

This is what people are reduced to when they use imaginary victimhood as a cudgel. Self-respect would only be a hindrance to them.

A handful of students at this elite school are bright enough to understand that Shapiro was only asking that people be judged on their merits, rather than by their skin color, per Martin Luther King. The other students turned on them.

“I wouldn’t read into Prof Shapiro’s tweet much beyond his opposition to affirmative action and related diversity policies when they modify merits-based approaches,” one user wrote. “Wholly unacceptable comment, check yourself,” the group-chat moderator quickly responded.

Dissenting students were kicked out of the chat for not agreeing with the mob.

[Rafael] Nuñez was kicked out of the group chat after defending himself against the accusation that he was “privileged” for defending students who spoke out. “That’s what really got to me,” he said. “Like, my mom was undocumented for 35 years. I grew up on food stamps and welfare and had to dig myself out a hole to get to go to Georgetown Law. My life has been difficult, but I don’t complain. And it just bothered me that these kids that didn’t even know me — you know, a fellow person of color — were telling me that I’m privileged. Like, you don’t know the things that I had to see growing up and what I had to do and struggle to get here.”

Nuñez describes himself as tending “to lean a little more liberal.” Let’s hope this experience will help him outgrow that.

When asked about complaining to the administration, he responded,

“They’re not going to be on my side. Like this is just gonna make more enemies for me, honestly. I’m going to keep my mouth shut. I’m on a scholarship. I don’t want to get kicked out, you know?”

That is the point of the Shapiro spectacle: to let it be known that if you say anything radical leftists don’t like, a school of sharks will tear you to pieces.

The strategy for controlling speech is simple but effective. First, they established that “racism” is so awful that anyone who says anything racist must be destroyed. Then, they defined racism as any speech they want silenced.

Liberals cannot win arguments on the merits because their ideology is moronic, juvenile, destructive, depraved, contemptible, and based on lies. But they can bully the herd into complying anyway by making examples of people like Ilya Shapiro, whose actual crime consists of being a new hire from the Cato Institute who has conservative views.

Meanwhile, leftists at Georgetown can say whatever they please. Professor Christine Fair proclaimed that those who supported moderate Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation deserved “miserable deaths while feminists laugh as they take their last gasps.”

As a ‘bonus,’ she said, ‘we castrate their corpses and feed them to swine.’

Georgetown took no action against Fair, because her views are compliant with the ideology that it is the primary mission of Georgetown and academia in general to promote.
