Under New Zealand’s Covid Despotism, KFC Is Contraband

It isn’t only George Orwell’s 1984 that our leftist ruling class has been using as an instruction manual. From Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged:

There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.

New Zealand has put this principle into practice through Covid repression. In Auckland, KFC is contraband:

Police were on patrol Sunday on the outskirts of Auckland when they “noticed a suspicious-looking vehicle traveling on a gravel road, and upon seeing the police car, the vehicle did a U-turn and sped off trying to evade police,” a spokesman said.

But it isn’t so easy to escape the law in New Zealand. After the vehicle was chased down, a search revealed “empty ounce bags and a large amount of takeaways” — that is, takeout food from KFC.

Police images show at least three buckets of chicken, several containers of coleslaw and an undisclosed quantity of fries.

The suspects were smuggling the contraband from Hamilton, 75 miles away.

Under Auckland’s Level 4 lockdown rules — the strictest in the country — restaurants, including takeout services, remain closed and everyone must stay home…

Authorities graciously allow restaurants to stay in business in other parts of the country, at least for now.

The suspects have been charged with violating the COVID-19 Public Health Response Act, and could get 6 months in prison or a NZ$4,000 (US$2,800) fine for their crime against the people or rather the government of New Zealand.

There have been only 27 Covid deaths in the entire country. A leftist might take this as proof that tyranny makes people safe. Others might ask, even if this were true, would it be worth it?

On tips from Dragon’s Lair, R F, and Mr. Freemarket.
