If you were to judge by coverage in the New York Times, you might think that this year’s wildfires in California are a cataclysmic event, unprecedented and irreversible. The fires must have been caused by anthropogenic global warming, so the only rational response is to allow the federal government to radically reduce our standard of living in the hope that even if this would probably have no measurable effect on the climate, at least Mother Nature might appreciate the gesture.
