Now Traffic Cameras Are Racist

We already knew that traffic accidents are racist. Now we learn that cameras intended to reduce these accidents are racist too.

From Chicago:

[F]or all of their safety benefits, the hundreds of cameras that dot the city … have come at a steep cost for motorists from the city’s Black and Latino neighborhoods. A ProPublica analysis of millions of citations found that households in majority Black and Hispanic ZIP codes received tickets at around twice the rate of those in white areas between 2015 and 2019.

You might think that enforcing traffic laws in Neighborhoods of Color makes them safer, thereby benefiting the residents. However, according to the prevailing ideology, if someone who isn’t white gets a traffic ticket, racism has occurred.

“We felt the brunt of it the way white people didn’t,” said Olatunji Oboi Reed, a longtime activist for racial equity in transportation in Chicago who has received a handful of camera tickets over the years.

Similar camera ticketing disparities have been discovered in Rochester, NY and Washington, DC.

Evidently, equity can only be achieved if traffic enforcement is limited to white neighborhoods, allowing Neighborhoods of Color to degenerate into demolition derbies.

The article includes information that debunks its own premise that traffic cameras are harmful to minorities:

According to a 2017 city report, Black Chicagoans are killed in traffic crashes at twice the rate of white residents. … Both red-light and speed cameras are distributed roughly evenly among the city’s Black, Latino and white neighborhoods. … In general, research has found that the cameras help reduce serious accidents by changing driver behavior.

Nonetheless, Olatunji Oboi Reed informs us that “The root cause of traffic violence in our society that is disproportionately impacting Black and brown people is structural racism.”

Since it would be racist to suggest that “traffic violence” has anything to do with the way people drive, ticketing them for driving like maniacs only serves to reinforce white privilege. Therefore, Powerline is probably correct that “it is a near certainty that the camera enforcement program will be curtailed, because equity.”

Then the media will shriek self-righteously that lack of traffic enforcement in minority neighborhoods proves systemic racism costs lives.

Good luck getting anyone judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin in a society where the victim is always right and victim status is based on skin color.
