Profiles in Moonbattery: Gwen Berry

Encouraged at every turn by the liberal establishment, the rot that is leftist politics continues to spread through sports, rendering them uninteresting to any spectators who aren’t rabid ideologues. You might think the Olympics would be spared, considering that they have always been a showcase for patriotism. Thanks to the obnoxious posturing of characters like Gwen Berry, the Olympics are now a showcase for moonbattery:

A U.S. hammer thrower turned away from the American flag as the national anthem played while she and two other athletes stood on the podium at the Olympic trials Saturday, later saying she was “pissed” the “Star-Spangled Banner” played as she received her bronze medal.

Her country pays for her to travel across the world to throw a hammer; all it asks in return is a modicum of respect. But Gwen Berry can’t even endure to listen to the anthem of the country she has been chosen to represent.

Berry — who qualified for her second U.S. Olympic team during the trials — shifted to face the stands rather than the flag before holding up a black shirt that read, “Activist Athlete.”

According to critical race theory, every star in the heavens revolves around the bogus yet sacred oppressedness of blacks. So naturally Berry believes that they played the Star-Spangled Banner only to spite her.

“I feel like it was a set-up, and they did it on purpose,” Berry said of the anthem being played.

She feels that they should have played the anthem some other time, when she was not around to be offended by its racistness.

Despite her own questionable antics while her nation’s anthem played, Berry called out the Olympic trial organizers as being inappropriate — to her. “It was real disrespectful,” she said.

It would not occur to Gwen Berry that she might owe other people respect. She occupies the top of the oppression totem pole. She owes no one anything, not even basic decency.

Also,

“I didn’t really want to be up there. … I was hot, I was ready to take my pictures and get into some shade.”

A country can only ask so much of its citizens.

Like many insufferable boors, Berry has delusions of significance:

“My purpose and my mission is bigger than sports,” Berry said. “I’m here to represent those … who died due to systemic racism. That’s the important part. That’s why I’m going. That’s why I’m here today.”

Systemic racism in the USA does not harm blacks; it benefits them — extravagantly. Affirmative Action is only the tip of an iceberg of obsessive favoritism that pervades every aspect of society and is aggressively imposed by the federal government.

This favoritism is confirmed by Berry’s own antics. Imagine if a Caucasian athlete made a similar display promoting pro-white ideology. Such an athlete would be subjected to absolute cancelation, and would never compete again. In contrast, privileged Persons of Oppressedness have the authorities on their side, so they can do whatever they please — as Berry knows from experience:

US Olympic athletes were prohibited in January 2020 from making political statements during anthems, after Berry was put on probation for raising her fist during the Pan-American Games in Peru in August 2019. US Olympic and Paralympic Committee in April reversed course, allowing kneeling and other forms of protests during the national anthem.

It is not unreasonable to insist that athletes who are competing explicitly as representatives of their country show respect for it. Berry does not qualify for the team.
