Leftism is a disease that kills a country one city at a time. The classic example is Detroit, the erstwhile Paris of the West, once the wealthiest city in the country, now among the poorest. There is a demographic shift; leftists like Coleman Young get elected; their policies drive up taxes, unemployment, and crime; the demographic shift accelerates as productive citizens leave; ever more radical leftists are elected. This vicious cycle works more slowly than a nuclear weapon, but as a comparison of contemporary Detroit and Hiroshima demonstrates, is more devastating in the long run. We now say good-bye to St Louis, once among America’s greatest cities. Tishaura Jones was elected mayor on Tuesday:

She will be sworn in on April 20 and faces the dual challenges presented by a declining population and one of the worst murder rates in the nation.

Jones promises to address the situation by blaming whites for being racist. She barks:

“We are done ignoring the racism that has held our city and our region back.”

But it is not racist whites who have pushed the murder rate into the stratosphere.

Police statistics show 262 people were killed in St. Louis last year — five fewer than the record of 267 set in 1993. But because the city’s population has declined sharply since 1993, the per capita homicide rate was much higher in 2020. …

Already, 2021 is shaping up to be even worse. The city has recorded 46 killings through Tuesday, about 10 ahead of last year’s dangerously high pace.

This results directly from the hamstringing of police and emboldening of criminals resulting from the pernicious Black Lives Matter phenomenon. The incoming mayor’s solution is to indulge in moonbattery while pouring gasoline on the fire.

Jones has pledged to bring in more social workers, mental health counselors and substance abuse counselors. She sees social aid as an alternative to adding more uniformed officers while her victory speech focused largely on overcoming racism and bigotry.

If racism against blacks is a problem, how does she explain her own election? Like Obama, she doesn’t explain it. She just keeps plowing forward with the cultural Marxist demagoguery.

“I will not stay silent when I spot racism,” Jones said. “I will not stay silent when I spot homophobia or transphobia. I will not stay silent when I spot xenophobia. I will not stay silent when I spot religious intolerance. I will not stay silent when I spot any injustice.”

However, she will stay silent about crime when it continues to skyrocket.

If you live in St Louis, don’t expect to defend your property by standing in the yard with an AR-15 like Mark McCloskey when the mob approaches. Get out now, before property values collapse to Detroit levels.
