Where the Money Blown on Homelessness in California Goes

As of last May, the California State Association of Counties found that the state had blown $29.5 billion on homelessness in fiscal years 2019/2020–2024/2025. What’s worse, California spends federal money on homelessness by the $billions. For example, in the 2021–2022 budget, $4.9 billion from the American Rescue Plan went to homelessness.

Meanwhile, homelessness in the erstwhile Golden State continues to skyrocket.

Where does the money go? US Attorney General Bill Essayli provides examples:

$2.2 Million can go a long way toward paying off luxury purchases on a credit card, even among fat cats who can afford a seat at the table in Gavin Newsom’s California.

Not since the global warming hoax have liberals come up with a better way to launder taxpayer money to facilitate graft. No wonder they embrace policies that encourage homelessness.

Ukrainian Refugee Democrats Don’t Care About

Democrats love Ukraine and they love refugees, yet they don’t seem terribly upset about the murder of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska.

Via Legal Insurrection:

Zarutska boarded the Charlotte (NC) Light Rail system on Friday, August 22nd, just before 10 pm after her shift at a local pizza restaurant, and four minutes later, she was stabbed to death in what police say was a random attack, allegedly by a violent repeat offender who is well known to local law enforcement.

No doubt he is also well known to the judges who keep letting him loose.

Video of the attack suggests why the liberal establishment media does not seem to find the story interesting.

The footage shows the suspect, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., in the moments leading up to the murder, Zarutska boarding the train and sitting directly in front of him, completely oblivious, of course, to what was about to happen, and in the moments after, where he’s seen walking to a train exit with blood dripping, presumably from the knife.

One look at Brown and you will see that story does not advance preferred narratives.

At least local media was willing to cover it:

As with the Annunciation Catholic Church bloodbath, authorities rushed to defend the protected class of the murderer:

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles (D) … issued a statement, spending one whole sentence on the victim before spending several paragraphs talking about mental health and homelessness and how the homeless shouldn’t be stigmatized.

“We will never arrest our way out [of] issues such homelessness and mental health,” she wrote.

At least, not if authorities keep unleashing sociopaths on the public.

And for good measure, she added, “Also, those who are unhoused are more frequently the victim of crimes and not the perpetrators.”

Meanwhile, here’s how seriously the murder has been taken by the Charlotte City Council, where Democrats hold a 9–2 majority:

Moonbat Forest Management

Come to Democrat-dominated Olympia, Washington to see what America will look like if leftists succeed in reducing it to a homeless encampment:

$1 Billion NYC Deal to House Moochers in Hotels

Riding around on a bicycle ratting out delivery drivers who leave their engine running can provide a nice living in moonbat-ruled New York City, but the big money is elsewhere:

The Adams administration has inked a nearly $1 billion contract with the hotel industry for emergency shelter space…

Taxpayers are on the hook for the $929.1 million reupped with the Hotel Association of New York City Foundation as the total city population still includes a whopping 86,000 people, including homeless individuals and asylum seekers.

“Asylum seekers” are better known as “illegal immigrants” or more accurately, “foreign invaders.”

Meanwhile, as hordes of moochers luxuriate in hotels at public expense, tourists avoid New York not only because liberalism has reduced it to a cesspool but because hotel rooms are prohibitively expensive due to scarcity.

Fortunately, NYC doesn’t need money from tourists. It can seize as much as it wants from the taxpayers who have not yet fled.

Or maybe it will manage to bleed taxpayers dry:

The overall cost to house migrants per night is $352 — including $130 to hotels for the room rental, city officials said last year.

Too bad NYC can’t print money to finance open borders like the Biden Regime was doing.

Project Homekey: $820 million Liberal Looting Spree

The libs in charge of California were wise to raise the limit on permissible theft to at least $7 billion. That makes Project Homekey kosher:

Once hailed as a fast-track solution to California’s homelessness crisis, Project Homekey now looks like a billion-dollar boondoggle littered with empty buildings and broken promises. …

Out of 2,157 rooms the county bought with $550 million, a staggering 71% sit empty. The city’s record is only slightly better, with 44% of its 1,237 units still unoccupied despite spending $820 million.

The $820 million is part of a bigger picture. $2.3 billion spent on homeless services in Los Angeles was recently found to be unaccounted for.

The more taxpayer money they throw at it, the more homelessness there is to throw money at. Where does the money go? We are left to speculate.

Incidentally, likely 2028 presidential candidate Gavin Newsom — who has presided over this waste and corruption — touts California as a model for homelessness.

LA Bums Drive Doctor Out of Business

The choice is between civilization and the sort of moonbattery that dominates California. An aspect of civilization that will be dearly missed if moonbattery prevails is medical care.

From the Los Angeles suburb Huntington Park:

Dr. Tahani Soliman, owner of a Los Angeles County medical practice, has spent years battling a group of unhoused individuals who have turned her rooftop into their own personal space – terrorizing her staff, setting fires, and creating an unsafe work environment, KTLA News reported.

You can call bums “unhoused individuals” or whatever other euphemism you like, but they will still behave like bums.

For years, the self-employed doctor has endured the homeless encampment consistently taking over her building’s roof – stealing electricity, stripping scrap metal from air conditioning units and even starting trash fires.

She puts up barbed wire to stop derelicts from climbing onto her roof from a neighboring parking structure, where they have established a colony. They repeatedly tear it down.

What are you going to do, call the police? This is California. Single-party Democrat rule means the authorities side with the bums.

Dr. Soliman finally gave up after spending over $100,000 on repairs and fencing necessitated by tramps:

‘No protection for my employees, for my patients or my tenants,’ Soliman told KTLA.

‘That’s why I’m going to retire, because of this, I lost everything.’

You can see why the Los Angeles area is second only to the still more liberal San Francisco area for corporate headquarters moving away.

Unfortunately, not everyone is in a position to escape from the inevitable consequences of putting Democrats in power. Still more unfortunately, some who are bring Democrat voting habits with them.

Still More Moonbattery in Washington State

As Seattle pulls it down the Democrat Death Spiral, Washington State sinks ever deeper into a maelstrom of moonbattery, inflicting race-based “justice,” distributing other people’s money on the basis of race, officially honoring Islamic holidays, and now imposing rent control and unemployment benefits for striking nonworkers.

From the approving moonbats at Associated Press:

In the final days of the Washington legislative session, lawmakers hashed out agreements to approve a bill that sets limits on rent increases and a measure that gives striking workers unemployment benefits.

They call it the Left Coast for a reason:

If signed into law, the rent stabilization bill would be among the first in the nation, adding Washington to states like Oregon and California that have sought new ways to curb homelessness. Washington joined Oregon in efforts to give striking workers unemployment payments…

Anyone doubt that this liberal weenie will sign the pernicious bills into law?

There is not much reason to work when the government forces other people to pay you to go on strike instead.

To gauge the effectiveness of curbing homelessness with rent control, look to New York City. The predictable effect is to prevent people from building new housing or becoming landlords.

Democrats want more homelessness, because they think it gives them political leverage. Otherwise they would not deliberately increase it under the Orwellian guise of decreasing it. As communist dictator and Founding Father of modern liberalism Vladimir Lenin is said to have said, “The worse, the better.”

Los Angeles Hits Itself With Derelict Tax

Everyone knows that elections have consequences. Yet somehow the consequences manage to take those who voted for them by surprise:

Consumers in Los Angeles County were shocked Tuesday as a new quarter-percent sales tax, ostensibly to raise funds for services for the homeless, went into effect following a referendum in November.

L.A. voters passed Measure A, which replaced and increased an earlier county-wide sales tax for the homeless. That tax, passed a decade ago, failed to stem the growth of the homeless population and may even have encouraged it.

Throw money at homelessness, get more homelessness. California has proven this law to be reliable, even if where the money actually goes remains a mystery:

L.A. residents recently learned that $2.3 billion spent on homeless services in Los Angeles had been unaccounted for — and the money had come from the same sales taxes that referendums like Measure A had been designed to fund.

However, equitable utopia is never more than a few tax increases away, according to the liberal faith.
